Why You Keep Undercharging (And How to Stop)

The real reason you keep lowering your prices out of fear, and a simple way to price your work with confidence instead.

There's a moment almost every business owner recognizes immediately once you name it: you're about to send a quote, or update your prices, and right before you hit send, you lower the number. Not because the math changed. Because something in you flinched, and the flinch felt more urgent than the math did.

I hear this from women who are genuinely good at what they do, whose clients are happy, whose work holds up against anyone charging significantly more. The skill isn't the gap. The gap is that pricing rarely gets decided by looking at numbers β€” it gets decided by whatever feels survivable to say out loud in the moment, and "survivable" has almost nothing to do with what the work is actually worth.

The real problem underneath this isn't a pricing strategy problem, even though it looks like one from the outside. It's that most of us were taught, in a hundred small ways, that asking for money means something about our character β€” that wanting to be paid well makes us greedy, or difficult, or "not like that." So pricing decisions get filtered through a question that was never actually about the business: will this number make me seem like too much. And a number that passes that test is rarely the same number that reflects the actual value of the work.

Here's the shift that tends to matter most: your price isn't a statement about your worth as a person. It's information about what it costs to run a business that delivers this level of work, sustainably, without quietly resenting it six months from now. Framed that way, undercharging stops being "humble" and starts looking like what it actually is β€” a math problem disguised as a personality trait. A business that consistently prices below what it costs to run well isn't being generous. It's slowly running out of the ability to keep showing up for the people it serves.

There's a specific test worth applying to any price you're about to lower out of hesitation: would this number still make sense if a stranger, someone with zero emotional stake in seeming humble or agreeable, quoted it based purely on the time, skill, and cost involved. Usually, the honest answer is that the higher number was the accurate one all along, and the lower one was fear wearing the costume of a business decision.

The practical fix starts smaller than a full repricing overhaul. Pick one thing β€” a single service, a single product β€” and calculate what it actually costs you to deliver, including your time at a rate you'd consider fair for anyone else doing that work. Compare that number to what you're currently charging. The gap between those two numbers is usually where the undercharging is hiding, and seeing it in writing tends to make the case for changing it more convincing than any amount of talking yourself into confidence beforehand.

Raising a price doesn't require becoming a different, more confident person first. It requires deciding the number based on the cost and value of the work, and then saying it exactly as calmly as you'd say anything else true. Most of the anxiety around pricing lives in the anticipation, not the moment itself β€” new clients who've never seen your old prices have no reaction to compare it to. They just hear a number, delivered like it's simply a fact, because that's what it is.

If you only take one thing from this: the next time you catch yourself about to lower a number out of a flinch instead of a reason, pause and ask what a stranger with no stake in seeming agreeable would actually charge for this. That number is usually closer to the truth than the one fear was about to talk you into.
